FIRESIDE CHAT POLICY DISCUSSIONS
At the Roosevelt Institute at GWU, we seek to create spaces for conversation about issues important to our generation and its future. One way we do this is our Fireside Chats, in which members moderate discussions on relevant, oftentimes controversial subjects, that are important within the progressive community.
During discussions, members set community agreements to ensure safe spaces for free discussion without fear or judgement. We work with other student organizations to co-host these events to ensure a diversity of experiences and opinions to foster innovative discussion. We provide fact sheets with basic background knowledge so that all can feel comfortable with engaging in discussion of these interesting topics.
Past topics have included racial profiling, urban redevelopment, chronic homelessness in D.C., the progressive response to the opioid crisis, the impeachment of Donald Trump, and more. We hope that these productive discussions help foster innovative thinking which can lead to policy proposals and advocacy campaigns to implement them, while encouraging the intellectual growth of our wider university community.
